Chicago climate: Residents dig in after the winter storm leaves a layer of ice, snow and melting snow on New Year’s Day; most expected

CHICAGO (WLS) – Chicago residents are digging on Saturday after a winter storm that brought snow, ice and rain to the area. And more snow is expected this weekend.

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation began shoveling residential streets early Saturday.

The Illinois State Police said the winter precipitation caused at least a dozen incidents during the night.

There was also an accident on a slippery Lake Shore Drive around 6:30 pm. where a 26-year-old woman was injured.

The Chicago area only saw its first major storm of the season earlier this week, with several inches of snow and some freezing rain.

More snow is expected on Sunday morning after midnight, said ABC 7 meter Greg Dutra. It may drop up to 3 inches, but a generalized spread of 1 to 2 inches south of Interstate 80 is expected, with totals clearer to the north.

Some areas under the ice storm alert on Friday were expected to show up to half an inch of ice. Other areas can also see about a tenth of an inch of ice.

A wintery mixture of hail and freezing rain began to move to the southwestern suburbs after 7am on Friday and arrived in the city after 10am. Ice accumulations were expected to be higher in places like La Salle, Morris and Pontiac, but Naperville, Joliet and Kankakee could also see significant icing.

There have been reports of accumulation of 0.25 inches of ice from Valparaiso to Kankakee and up to 0.37 inches in Grundy County, said ABC 7 Chicago meteorologist Larry Mowry.

At night, the day’s mud froze again in ice.

Several accidents have been reported on the Dan Ryan Expressway, and there have been several spinouts on I-80 and Interstate 57 in the southwestern suburbs, and trees and cars covered in ice.

People could also be seen shuffling cautiously in the northwestern suburbs.

“We have all gone through 2020, and if this is what 2021 is playing for us, we are ready for it,” said Chicago resident Alex Jay.

The Illinois Department of Transportation loaded a revolving fleet of salt trucks into Villa Park, and more than 200 plows and salt trucks tried to keep the streets clear in Chicago.

Until 5 pm, light rain and winter mix fell across the area without significant ice formation as temperatures remained at or above zero. Between 5 pm and 11 pm, temperatures were expected to drop and to accumulate between 1 and 4 inches of show, with higher totals in the northern suburbs.

Lake County (IL) and northern Cook County could have more than 4 inches of total snow if the lake rises, said ABC7 meteorologist Larry Mowry.

ComEd said that at 15:10 there were 112 reported power cuts, affecting 2,910 customers across the system. The hardest hit area was Kankakee County, where 690 customers were without power. In Chicago, 178 customers are without power, the company said.

At Northbrook, the snow seemed heavy and moist enough to knock down some power lines.

A similar situation occurred in Mackinaw, near Peoria, but flames and smoke were visible there.

It happened just after 8 pm on Shermer Road in downtown Northbrook. Some of the lines were producing sparks on the wet pavement, but ComEd was able to resolve the problem quickly, Northbrook police said.
