The National Women’s Football League team in Washington just received an injection of bipartisanship.
Presidential daughters Chelsea Clinton and Jenna Bush Hager are buying stakes in Washington Spirit, according to Steven Goff of The Washington Post. Athletic’s Meg Linehan and Pablo Maurer also broke the news.
In addition to Clinton, daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Hager, daughter of George W. and Laura Bush, Spirit is also scheduled to add former USWNT goalkeeper Briana Scurry and revolutionary Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes to her property box . And more DC circle names are reportedly on the way.
Although his parents have their obvious political differences, Hager spoke of a “brotherhood” between women who grew up in and around the White House. Of today:
“Chelsea (Clinton) and I see each other, or we used to. Now, I don’t see anyone. But we used to see each other around New York City. And I reach out to the Obama girls and vice versa. But we do.
“There is a brotherhood because we are so few that we know what it looks like and the beauty of it and the living history and also some of the difficulties,” she said.
Steve Baldwin, a local technology executive, is currently the administrative owner of the team, which was established in 2012 as one of NWSL’s original eight teams.
Celebrity ownership is the new trend of the NWSL
The Spirit adding Clinton, Hager, Dawes, Scurry and others would continue the recent trend of celebrity ownership in the NWSL.
Naturally, Los Angeles’ Angel City FC is the most star-studded of the group, with a group of owners that includes (take a deep breath) Natalie Portman, Serena Williams, Jennifer Garner, Lindsey Vonn, Uzo Aduba, PK Subban, Jessica Chastain, America Ferrera, Candace Parker, Billie Jean King, Eva Longoria and Lilly Singh among others, as well as USWNT stars like Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Abby Wambach.
Tennis star Naomi Osaka also acquired a stake in the North Carolina Courage, according to The Athletic, while Tony Parker owns part of OL Reign and James Harden and Oscar De La Hoya are among the owners of Houston Dash. JJ Watt also tweeted once about his interest in buying the Utah Royals, which saw its assets eventually transferred to a Kansas City expansion team, co-owned by Patrick Mahomes’ fiancee, Brittany Matthews.
