Channel 4 documentary Queen Elizabeth: Love, Honor and Crown says monarch “frustrated” by Charles

The queen is “constantly frustrated with Prince Charles”, who “will never live up to her sense of duty,” said a royal expert in a new documentary.

Clive Irving, author of the new biography The Last Queen, believes that no member of the royal family has “responded” to Her Majesty’s sense of duty.

During the Channel 4 documentary, Queen Elizabeth: Love, Honor and Crown, which airs today at 9 pm, Irving argues that the Queen, 94, ‘never really understood’ her eldest son Charles, 72, – heir to the throne – and is’ intrigued by it. ‘

Irving also claims that Prince William is the only member of royalty who fully appreciates the Monarch’s’ very dedicated sense of duty ‘, saying:’ All those around the Queen are never up to it at any time. Your own family is not up to the task. Charles is never up to that.

The royal author also said that the queen is more attracted to Prince André, 61, than her older brother, saying: ‘To this day, she is more openly affectionate with André and more forgiving to him than to Carlos.’

Also discussing the different characters of the brothers, Ingrid Seward, chief editor of Majesty magazine, called Charles “the opposite of the younger brother, Andrew”.

She said, ‘He’s [Andrew] noisy, presumptuous, very charming, whenever you want. He can be arrogant and rude; he has some characteristics of his own father. ‘

Seward added that Andrew’s active service in the Navy, following Prince Philip, including the helicopter pilot on missions during the Falklands War, ensured that he returned “as a war hero, his mother was proud”.

She said that as first and second in line to the throne at that time, Carlos and André represented ‘everything the monarchy could be’.

The documentary claims to be an “in-depth examination of various dramatic conflicts between the crown and the family during the Queen’s long reign” and begins by looking at the romance of the Queen and Prince Philip in the mid-forties.

The couple’s 1947 marriage was, it is argued, supposed to be a low-key affair, but it was hijacked by the need to offer some post-war jubilation and became a much grander national celebration.

The program also suggests that Prince Philip, 99, who is recovering from a month-long stay in London hospitals after a recent period of ill health, played a significant role in modernizing the monarchy.

Disqualified documents obtained by Channel 4 also reveal that the Queen granted her permission for Princess Margaret's ill-fated engagement to Group Captain Peter Townsend, a divorcee - but that the Monarch had to reach an agreement with then Prime Minister Anthony Eden to the potential marriage to get the government's green light

The documentary features now declassified documents, including one shedding light on Princess Margaret’s ill-fated engagement to Group Captain Peter Townsend, a divorcee who was an accomplice to King George VI.

The queen was unable to offer her consent for a wedding to be held because she is the head of the Church, which did not allow divorced people to marry in the church at that time in history – but some claimed that the Monarch had tried to ‘thwart’ the marriage, which the documents now refute.

The documents obtained by Channel 4 show that then Prime Minister Anthony Eden also had to give his consent, and the Queen and Prime Minister reached an agreement for a wedding to take place. The couple failed to make it to the altar, however, with Princess Margaret finally canceling her love affair.

This week, a source close to the royal family said that Prince William does not believe he is ‘trapped’ within the British monarchy system, something Prince Harry claimed during his interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this month.

Instead, the Duke of Cambridge, who is second in line to the throne, behind his father, ‘accepted’ his role and ‘the path laid out for him,’ say royal sources.

“He is very grandson of his grandmother when it comes to duty and service,” the source, who is close to both brothers, told the Sunday Times.
