Celeste is a beautiful, heart-breaking platform game that requires skill, patience and pulses that keep on coming. It’s difficult, but that’s the point – he wants to teach you a lesson about never giving up, even when you don’t believe in yourself.
Celeste Classic 2 is a free PICO-8 platform game in a similar style, made by Maddy Thorson, Noel Berry and Lena Raine – two of the developers and the composer, respectively – to celebrate the three-year anniversary of the launch of Celeste. And yours Difficult.
PICO-8, if you’re wondering, is a downloadable “fantasy console” for which anyone can make games. All games on the PICO-8 have 16 colors and a screen of only 128 x 128 pixels, giving the game library a unique and robust pixel appearance that blends very well with a retro-inspired design.
If you are really wondering why the game is called “Celeste Classic 2”, then you will be pleased to know that the original, called “Celeste 1.0”, is also available on the PICO-8 website. The game, which was the precursor to the full Celeste that we know and love, was made in just four days in 2015. A version of Celeste 1.0 can be found in Celeste, inside a hidden room in the Celestial Resort Side A.
Although it has a similar mechanics, although reduced, Celeste Classic 2 presents a new fighting hook instead of the aerial vest, as well as a character that is not Celeste’s protagonist, Madeline, called Lani. There are at least 16 new strawberries to collect and, according to people in the comments, it will take five to sixty minutes to complete. You can also listen to the beepy boopy soundtrack at Lena Raine’s camp!
