Ceiling fans sold at Home Depot remembered after reports of blades flying

Hampton Bay Mara ceiling fan

The Hampton Bay Mara indoor / outdoor ceiling fan is being removed due to the risk of personal injury.

Home Depot

Up to 190,000 Hampton Bay ceiling fans sold exclusively at Home Depot last year are being picked up by the distributor after an increasing number of reports of disconnected blades as the fan spins. The distributor, King of Fans, attributed the problem to a defective fan blade locking clip, saying in a statement to customers that the problem is “an isolated manufacturing defect”.

The fan in question is the 54 inch version of the Hampton Bay Mara Indoor / outdoor ceiling fan, available in black, matte black, matte white and polished nickel. The defect affects about 182,000 ceiling fans sold in the United States between April and October 2020, as well as 8,800 additional fans sold in Canada – although a Home Depot spokesman tells CNET that these figures reflect the total number of units available for sale, and that the actual number of units sold was “about 80,000”.

To date, there have been 47 reports of fan blades coming off while the fan spins overhead, including two cases where the blade hit a customer and four cases where the blade caused material damage.

You can check the UPC number printed on a silver sticker on the fan case assembly to see if it needs to be replaced.

US Consumer Product Safety Commission

King of Fans notes that the defect does not affect all Mara on the market and advises customers to check the UPC number printed on a silver label on the fan housing assembly. If that number matches the number of runs for the affected product, the fan will need to be replaced.
