She noted that the US reached almost 4,000 deaths per day and nearly 400,000 deaths from coronavirus in total.

“In mid-February, we expect half a million deaths in this country,” she said.

Walensky emphasized that these numbers do not represent the “tens of thousands” of people who have recovered from COVID-19, but have an “uncharacterized syndrome”. She also said that the United States has yet to see “the ramifications of what happened to vacation travel”, which the new director said will lead to “high rates of hospitalizations and deaths after that”.

“I think we still have some dark weeks ahead of us,” she said.

The US accounted for more than 23.8 million COVID-19 cases and 397,252 deaths, according to data from the Johns Hopkins University.

The mortality rate reached new heights during the coldest months, and between January 12 and 16, the United States recorded at least 3,6000 deaths per day, according to The COVID Tracking Project.

After “Face The Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan asked Walensky how often she will conduct briefings, the new director said she “will do briefings whenever I can” and “whenever new information comes”.

“When there are new things to report, you will hear from someone at the CDC and it may well be me,” she said.
