Casino plans that could reach the SC border will resume in 2022

A casino bet will take place until next year for a developer from Georgia who hopes to build the state’s first casinos, including one that could be on Lake Hartwell.

Casinos are not legal in Georgia and the legislature ended its session this year on Wednesday without taking action on several plans to expand the game, including plans to add sports betting or allow casinos.

Developer Rick Lackey said he will continue negotiations and hopes to have contracts signed with several casino operators early next year, pending approval. He said he owns 5,000 acres in the state under listing contracts, including locations on Lake Hartwell, on the coast, Atlanta and near the Florida border.

A resort plan that Lackey announced would be a $ 300 million hotel and casino eight kilometers off the shore of Lake Hartwell, on the border with South Carolina. The site is about 500 acres and is off Exit 177 Interstate 85, just over the border. This would include luxury housing and labor, retail and a golf course.

Georgia’s legislative session also ended without the approval of a sports betting proposal that had been approved by the Senate.

The legalization of casinos would require a two-thirds vote by the state House and Senate, the signature of the governor and then a referendum by voters.

Lackey said that no action this year would be a victory for him, as the sports betting plan would not allow casinos, and having a chance to get casino approval next year is better for his plans.

South Carolina gambling

South Carolina does not have many types of legal gambling, even with its neighbors legalizing or actively seeking gambling expansions.

There are a few ways to play legally in South Carolina: bingo, raffles and state lottery. And a floating casino called Big M Casino operates in the Myrtle Beach area, launching two cruise ships for cool games.

Legal sports betting is becoming more and more common in the country; half of the states have some form of legal sports betting in place or approved.

The neighboring state of North Carolina recently approved another casino, near Charlotte. The casino is expected to be built by the end of the year and will cost approximately the same, about $ 300 million, as the proposed casino on Lake Hartwell.
