Buckeyes priority target arrives in Columbus for visit

The dead recruitment period is still in effect, and Buckeyes cannot host any recruits until at least April.

But if recruits want to visit during their hours, this is allowed, but without contact with Ohio State coaches. So that’s what Santa Ana (California) Mater Dei’s four-star linebacker Raesjon Davis is doing this weekend.

Davis is in Columbus to visit the city and see the state of Ohio for himself this weekend, a possible sign that the momentum is shifting in favor of the Buckeyes for one of his two targets not yet committed.

And freshmen who signed up early may have a chance to be near Davis this weekend. Lettermen Row’s Birm has more:

The chance for the incoming freshman class and their parents to be around for Davis and his parents means that they don’t Tue to spend the entire weekend alone. Some real relationship building can happen. Jaylen Johnson, a signatory from the state of Ohio, will also take a trip to Columbus to see Davis, and he has been vital in recruiting the program so far.

Buckeyes co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison retires

After spending the past 41 years, Ohio State defense co-coordinator Greg Mattison retired from football.

Mattison reinforced his legacy as one of football’s most respected defensive minds with two seasons working at Ohio State before his retirement was announced on Friday.

Mattison worked on both sides of the game, spending time with Michigan and the Buckeyes. He won a national championship working with Urban Meyer in Florida. He worked at the highest level in the sport while serving on the Baltimore Ravens team in the NFL. And he built a reputation for setting up tough, fundamentally solid and petty defenses wherever he went.

That veteran experience was instrumental in Ohio State coach Ryan Day when he pulled Mattison from the other side of the rivalry two years ago to anchor his first team with the program. The move was probably always a short-term bridge to the future, given Mattison’s age, but his knowledge of the game was widely praised by the linebackers he worked with and the coaches he coached at Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

What does Mattison’s retirement mean for the progress of the Ohio State program? Lettermen Row broke it in a Rapid Reaction presented by Byers Auto.

Ryan Day meets with the media for a preview of the off season

Ohio State coach Ryan Day met with the media on Friday morning to review Greg Mattison’s retirement, review the next quarterback competition and predict the Buckeyes’ off-season list of activities. The press conference can be found below.

After Day spoke to the media, Austin Ward of Lettermen Row, Jeremy Birmingham and Spencer Holbrook reacted to the press conference and interrupted the Buckeyes’ quarterback competition and how it could happen during spring practice next month. They also talked about the positions needed for the Buckeyes to advance and who could take over these roles soon. It’s another quick reaction from Lettermen Row.
