CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Browns have not yet given up on the violent Jadeveon Clowney.
They received the Pro Bowler three times on a free agent visit on Wednesday at their Berea facility, but he left in the late afternoon without a contract. Hiring is not imminent, a league source told cleveland.com, but the Browns will keep Clowney on their short list of fighters to help replace Olivier Vernon with Myles Garrett.
They have already strengthened their position last week by signing former Falcons player Takk McKinley with a $ 4.25 million one-year contract.
If the Browns sign with Clowney, they will put pressure on the quarterback with the general choices of ex-bookend # 1 – Garrett in 2017 and Clowney in 2014 for the Texans.
The Browns chased Clowney, 28, last season, but didn’t get a chance to bring him on a free agent visit because of the COVID-19 protocols. This was an opportunity for the two parties to get to know each other and see if it fits.
When Clowney hit the market in the off-season spent as a free agent for the Seahawks, the Browns offered him more money than any other team on a one-year contract, and they were competitive in their multi-year offer.
Clowney (6-5, 255) chose to sign a $ 13 million one-year ‘prove-it’ contract with the Titans, where he met with coach Mike Vrabel, his former Texan defensive coordinator.
Clowney started in eight of the first nine games last season and spent the last seven on the reserve due to an injury after undergoing surgery to repair a ruptured meniscus. He didn’t have a sack in his first eight games, but he was still unsettling, with six hitting strikes. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the 19th most daring of the last season out of 108 heats, a step ahead of Vernon, who suffered a rupture in the Achilles tendon at the end of the season.
Despite the hiring of McKinley, who was discharged by the Falcons in November and has not re-signed by the Raiders this season, the Browns are still looking for more help, whether through free agency, trade or the NFL Draft.
The PFF classified Clowney as its most devastating free agent No. 4 this offseason, behind Shaq Barrett, JJ Watt, Carl Lawson. They estimate their market value in one year, $ 13 million. Spotrac.com projected $ 6.5 million in one year,
“Just like any free agent subscription, the key is to understand what a player is bringing to the table,” wrote PFF. “Clowney has elite tools, but he was never an elite pass-rusher, as he posted a pass-rush note in the 1970s for each of the past three years and a 69.6 mark in 2020. The totals of bags will fluctuate from year to year, so don’t let that change the narrative: Clowney is a good, not great, pass-rusher.
“He does his best job in the racing game, using these elite tools and heavy hands to win at the point of attack. Since joining the league, Clowney has been a staunch defender of the 95th percentile and a pass-rusher of the 77th percentile, so his future team should expect similar snap-to-snap production right now. ”
In 74 games over seven seasons, Clowney scored 32 sacks, 255 tackles, 75 by defeat and 86 hitting QB.
