One of South Carolina’s most notable football additions to the squad during the off-season was the addition of the transfer defender Jason Brown. Listed at 6-3 and 235 pounds, Brown is in Columbia after leaving the FCS Saint Francis program through the NCAA Transfer Portal.
The oldest quarterback in the room, Brown has more college gaming experience than sophomore Luke Doty and freshman Colten Gauthier, but the leap to SEC football is a transition he admitted on Thursday that will take some getting used to.
“It’s a lot faster,” said Brown. “I have to know where I’m going with football and I can’t make any mistakes.
“These defense guys are trained very well and they know exactly what they are doing and they know how to try to get into our heads by mixing covers and blitzes and pretending blitzes and things like that. I really have to know what I’m doing and have to study them and learn the best you can. It’s fast and challenging, but I love it and it’s fun. ”
Brown missed the first of three spring training sessions completed due to illness, but taking the field in the last two training sessions and the reps entering and leaving the field has been useful for the veteran redshirt from Fredericksburg, Virginia.
“There is no bad team at the SEC,” said Brown. “Every football player who plays here is going to be good, that’s why they are here. Just practicing and repeating and going against our guys every day and getting used to them in the offense and going against the guys in defense is going to be the key. This is what will get me updated as soon as possible. “
