Broadway Mean Girls musical ended amid continued Coronavirus shutdown

The 2018 Broadway musical Mean Girls, based on the 2004 Tina Fey comedy of the same name, it will not reopen at the August Wilson Theater when Broadway resumes after the pandemic. Production ended effectively on March 11, 2020 (the eve of the mandatory closure of the state of New York), with 29 previews and 804 regular performances. Producers say the musical recovered its full capitalization at the beginning of last year.

Mean Girls, directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, it debuted on April 8, 2018, with a book by Fey, music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. The musical was nominated for 12 Tony 2018 awards, including Best Musical. A national tour was launched in the fall of 2019, interrupting operations at the same time as the closure of Broadway. A London bow – as well as a previously reported film adaptation – is underway.

Currently, all Broadway shows will remain closed until May 30. Another extension may follow, however, even though the initial stages of a vaccine distribution indicate a reopening in the unspecified future.

The original cast was led by Erika Henningsen (The miserable) as the new face of Cady Heron (played on screen by Lindsay Lohan). Bringing Plastics, the wicked clique that Heron infiltrated, was Taylor LoudermanFancy Boots) as queen bee Regina George, Ashley Park (Sunday in the Park with George) like Gretchen Wieners and Kate Rockwell (Rock of Ages) like Karen Smith.

The last Broadway company, which received several new artists on March 10, included Reneé Rapp as Regina George, Krystina Alabado as Gretchen Wieners, Sabrina Carpenter as Cady Heron, Olivia Kaufmann as Janis Sarkisian, Chad Burris as Damian Hubbard, Laura Leigh Turner as Karen Smith, Catherine Brunell as Mrs. Heron / Mrs. Norbury / Mrs. George, Kyle Selig as Aaron Samuels, Cheech Manohar as Kevin Gnapoor and Rick Younger as Mr. Duvall.
