Britney Spears’ lawyer opens a petition asking her father, Jamie Spears, to step down as conservative

Britney Spears’ lawyer filed a petition requesting that Jodi Montgomery become the singer’s permanent conservative and her father, Jamie Spears, resign.

Jamie Spears has been his daughter’s conservative since 2008 and for a brief period was his only conservative in 2019, following the resignation of his former co-conservative, Andrew Wallet. Later that year, Jamie Spears took a break from controlling his property due to his health and Montgomery intervened as a temporary conservative of the person.

In a petition filed on Tuesday, Britney Spears ‘lawyer “asked for Jamie Spears’ resignation and asked Montgomery to take over the role permanently. The court was notified last week that the singer’s lawyer planned to file the petition.

Britney Spears’ lawyers and her father did not immediately return a request for comment on Thursday about the lawsuit.

The 39-year-old singer has had a legal guardian since her public break in 2007. A #FreeBritney movement gained popularity in 2019 after fans said Jamie Spears had abused the guardianship to maintain control over his daughter – allegations that he and his lawyers have repeatedly denied it over the years.

Jamie Spears said he saved his daughter from exploitative influences and freed her equity from debt over the years.

In February, the family’s legal battle was featured in the New York Times documentary “Framing Britney Spears”. The film explored Britney Spears’ rise to stardom, the resulting media pressure and “the fervent fan base that is convinced Spears should be released from guardianship,” wrote the New York Times.

Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler and Valerie Bertinelli gathered around the pop star after the documentary was released.

Britney Spears has not spoken publicly about guardianship since the documentary was released, but last month in court her lawyer said it was “no secret” that she did not want her father to be her guardian.

Her most direct approach to the situation came in 2019, before her request to remove her father, when she told fans that “rumors” and “death threats” against her family were getting out of hand. Britney Spears asked fans not to believe everything they hear and asked for privacy for her family.

“My situation is unique, but I promise that I am doing what is best at the moment,” she said. “You may not know this about me, but I am strong and I fight for what I want!”
