Boulder Police used the handcuffs of the murdered officer to formally place suspects in shooting in custody

“This week, several Boulder officers and others responded to a local hospital to formally place the suspect in the shooting on Monday in custody,” police said in the tweet. “In doing so, the police informed him that the handcuffs used that day were those of Officer Eric Talley. The suspect was taken to prison.”

Talley was one of 10 people killed when police said Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa opened fire at a King Soopers store on Monday afternoon.

“It was a great honor to use Officer Talley’s handcuffs to formally prosecute him in prison,” the police said. “Although it was a small gesture, we hope it will be the beginning of the healing process that so many of us need right now.”

The Boulder Police Department released this photo of Officer Eric Talley's handcuffs in a Twitter post.
Talley, 51, a father of seven, was the first Boulder cop to arrive at the King Soopers store when the shooting started. Police chief Maris Herold praised his courage in getting to know the dangers.

“I must tell you the heroic action of that policeman in reacting to the scene,” said the chief of police. “He didn’t need to work in policing, but he felt a higher calling.”

The policeman killed in the Boulder supermarket shooting was the father of 7 children

She said Talley was “willing to die to protect others” and incorporated “everything that policing deserves and needs”.

Alissa, 21, is accused of killing 10 people randomly with an AR-15 pistol. When he was arrested at the scene of the shooting, he was taken to the hospital because he was shot in the leg. He was arrested at Boulder County Prison the next day.

The suspect appeared in court on Thursday when his defense attorney asked a judge to delay the next hearing because the defense needs to assess what she called her client’s mental illness. A prosecutor also told the judge that he hopes to open more charges in the case within weeks.

Alissa was charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder and one of attempted murder, the prosecutor’s office said on Thursday.
