After cleaning up the Grammy Awards last year, Billie Eilish was set to make a decidedly minor noise at the 63rd annual ceremony on Sunday night. That is, until the final award of the night is announced.
In addition to winning a single trophy for his James Bond theme “No Time To Die” and a suitably temperamental performance at the start of the show, Eilish seemed happy to play the second violin for the other nominees of the night, including Megan Thee Stallion, who won several awards throughout the ceremony.
Then, when Beatles drummer Ringo Starr announced that he won the Grammy for Disc of the Year for the second year in a row, Eilish in shock and his brother, Finneas, took the stage.
Eilish said she never expected to take the prize home, apparently surprised to have beaten competitors, including Doja Cat (“Say So”), Dua Lipa (“Don’t Start Now”), Post Malone (“Circles”), DaBaby and Roddy Ricch (“ROCKSTAR”), Black Pumas (“Colors”), Beyoncé (“Black Parade”) and Megan Thee Stallion’s remix “Savage”, which also features Beyoncé.
In her acceptance speech, the 19-year-old singer clearly stated that the rapper “Savage” deserved the victory much more.
“This is really embarrassing for me,” said Eilish at the beginning of his speech. “Megan, girl … I was going to write a speech about how you deserve this, but then I thought, ‘They are not going to choose me at all’, I thought, ‘It’s hers’ You deserve this. You had a year that I think is unstoppable. You’re a queen. I want to cry thinking about how much I love you. You are so Beautiful. You are so talented. You deserve everything in the world. I think about you constantly. I always cheer for you. You deserve it, honestly. “
She then asked everyone in the limited audience to cheer for Megan before giving a few shouts to her team.
“I really appreciate that,” concluded Eilish. “Thanks for receiving me.”
At the 2020 ceremony, Eilish became the youngest artist to scan the “Big Four” categories: Best New Artist, Song of the Year and Record of the Year for “Bad Guy” and Album of the Year for “When We All Fell Asleep, where are we going? ”
At the time, she said she also didn’t feel worthy of the award, saying to the crowd after the victory: “Can I just say that I think Ariana Grande deserves this?”
Her change on Sunday night, however, reminded many viewers who were watching the 2017 ceremony at home, where Adele dedicated her Album of the Year award to Beyoncé, using most of her time on stage to talk about the music superstar. .
