Bill Russell leaves the microphone with a reply to Tom Brady-Michael Jordan’s tweet

If we are talking about championship rings, Bill Russell cannot be left out of the conversation.

Tom Brady’s most recent Super Bowl victory has prompted fans and members of the media to compare the defender’s legendary career not only to other NFL legends, but also to iconic athletes from all sports. A popular name that has been cited is Michael Jordan, who now has one championship less than the future Hall of Fame signal caller.

The respective legends of Brady and Jordan were recently brought into focus by Twitter user A1Hoopz, who on Sunday night delivered a photo side by side TB12 and MJ, both with a fist full of rings. The photo was accompanied by a caption that said: “There is a table… .. and only these two can sit on it 🐐”

Enter Russell, who replied to the tweet saying “You’re getting close,” along with the memorable image of the Celtics legend grinning from ear to ear as he rocks the jewels he won for his plate full of success in the NBA.

To say that Russell has reason to disagree with the aforementioned tweet would be an understatement. One of the greatest big shots of all time, Russell led the Celtics in the NBA championships in all but two (!) Of his 13 seasons in Boston. Russell was the player’s head coach for his eleventh and eleventh career title.

Comparing players from different generations is ultimately a foolish mission, let alone comparing athletes who have played different sports. But if we are identifying the biggest winners in the history of team sports, Russell certainly deserves to be in the discussion.
