Biden’s administrator posts photos of the crowded border processing center for migrants amid criticism of transparency

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released photos of the temporary facilities used to process migrant children crossing the southern border of the United States on Tuesday.

The photos show crowded rooms, including children sleeping shoulder to shoulder on mattresses on the floor with aluminum blankets and benches. Another photo shows dozens of children in a transparent pen similar to a cage.

The photos were released at a time when the White House and the CBP were pressured by the fact that the media did not have access to these facilities. President Biden’s administration cited coronavirus protocols as the reason the press is not allowed.

In a statement accompanying the photos, CBP said it was working to “balance the need for public transparency and accountability”.

“CBP continues to transfer unaccompanied minors to the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as quickly and efficiently as possible after they are apprehended on the southwest border,” said CBP in a statement on Tuesday.

The agency continued: “To protect the health and safety of our workforce and those in our care, we continue to discourage outside visitors to our facilities; however, CBP is working to balance the need for public transparency and accountability. Images and videos are now available at the Donna Processing Center in Donna, Texas and at the Central Processing Center in El Paso, Texas. “

The photos released by CBP also show a line of potty apparently used as restrooms for children, as well as a field of artificial grass with some hula hoops, presumably as a play area.

Representative Henry Cuellar’s office, D-Texas, released photos of the same center in Donna, Texas on Monday, while the media is clamoring for better access to the southern border and the Biden government continues to deny that the border situation is a crisis.

“More needs to be done to deal with this growing humanitarian crisis,” he tweeted. “These migrant children need our help now. Not later”.
