Biden tells Mexican President he will end Trump’s “draconian” immigration policies

President Biden told Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday that he will reverse the Trump administration’s “draconian” immigration policies – in a week when the new US president signed a flurry of immigration orders.

A White House reading said that Biden spoke to Lopez Obrador to “review bilateral cooperation on a number of bilateral and regional issues, particularly regional migration.”

“The president outlined his plan to reduce migration by addressing its roots, increasing resettlement capacity and alternative legal immigration paths, improving border processing to judge asylum applications and reversing the draconian immigration policies of the previous government,” said the communicated.

Biden campaigned to end the Trump administration’s stricter immigration policies and made it a priority since his inauguration.

On Wednesday, Biden signed an order interrupting the construction of the wall on the southern border, while the government is studying whether to redirect the money that was allocated to the project.

He also signed a memorandum to protect the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects immigrants who came to the country illegally as children from deportation.

Other orders included the end of Trump-era travel bans, another revoking the Trump administration’s plan to exclude non-citizens from the census and distribution of seats in Congress and another to extend the designation of Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) to Liberians in the country until June 2022.

On Friday, a 100-day deportation freeze went into effect and was immediately subjected to a Texas lawsuit – claiming it was dangerous, unconstitutional and in violation of a DHS agreement.

Biden is also moving forward with a comprehensive immigration plan that includes an eight-year path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants, as well as immediate green cards for farmers and beneficiaries of DACA and Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Biden also vowed to end the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) – known as the “Stay in Mexico” policy. This Trump-era policy keeps migrants in Mexico pending their hearings. Biden promised to end the program, but officials during the transition said it may take longer to reach.
