Five games from publisher Bethesda Softworks now support Microsoft’s FPS Boost feature, the technology that increases frame rates for games running on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, almost doubling their original frame rates. These titles are Dishonored: Definitive Edition, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Special edition, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Fanged.
Microsoft announced FPS Boost support for these five games on Monday via Xbox Wire, saying players can “expect a 30fps increase to almost 60fps” after enabling the feature. FPS Boost was announced in February as a new feature for backwards compatibility of Xbox Series X with select Xbox One games. The optional graphics setting can double or quadruple frame rates for games running on the new Xbox, but requires “partner[ing] closely with developers to improve ”their games.
Bethesda and Microsoft have a very close partnership, now that the Xbox maker has officially completed the acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks.
Microsoft noted that some Bethesda games that now support FPS Boost can run at a lower resolution to support higher frame rates:
In some cases, as there are higher graphics requirements to enable FPS Boost technology, we had to reduce the resolution of a game to ensure that it runs smoothly and plays well. In these selected cases, such as To fall 4 and Fallout 76 in this latest title announcement, FPS Boost is not automatically enabled for Xbox Series X players. For all titles that receive this update, players will see a clear indicator if a title is running FPS Boost.
All five Bethesda games that support FPS Boost are included as part of the Xbox Game Pass.
