NEWBERRY COUNTY – The Newberry County Career Center and Mid-Carolina High School received a special visit from Be Pro, Be Proud Truck in February.

This truck is part of the “Be Pro, Be Proud SC” project that crosses the state and is an 18-wheel, expandable double, 53-foot truck. Inside the truck there are eight simulators, which include truck driving, forklifts, carpentry, welding, etc.

The Department of Employment and Workforce oversees “Be Pro, Be Proud SC.”

The first truck stop in Newberry County was at the NCCC and students from Newberry Middle, Whitmire Community and Newberry High School were able to take a tour. The truck then stopped at Mid-Carolina High School for students in the Mid-Carolina area to take a tour.

“This truck provides students with practical skills-based business experiences. They are trying to promote the trade in skills and expose students to these opportunities because there is a significant need in South Carolina for this, ”said Sarah Harvey, director of the NCCC. “Students were able to see these jobs and had the opportunity to learn that we offer these programs at the career center to meet those needs.”

Harvey said about 150 students from the Newberry County school district visited the truck. She said interested parties came and spoke to the NCCC team after the visit.

“Part of our mission is to expose these children to the career center and let them know that we are not the vocational school their parents attended. We can help children who want to graduate and go straight to the job market and for children who want to go beyond a four-year diploma. We can have these conversations, ”said Harvey.
