While the new season of CW’s Bat Woman will introduce Ryan Wilder of Javicia Leslie as the new heroine wearing the elegant black and red Batsuit, the audience will not be in the dark about what will happen to Kate Kane from Ruby Rose.
“It’s something that will solve it,” said showrunner Caroline Dries during the CW virtual panel this morning. As fans remember, last year Rose announced her departure from the series after the end of the first season. While Dries was shy when asked exactly when viewers would get this resolution, she joked: “I will say, as a storyteller, it will be a lot of twists and turns. It will be a great roller coaster ride for all of our characters and my hope is that it looks like a very incredible and satisfying decision ”.

Before the show’s debut this Sunday, Dries was joined by Leslie, whose character Ryan discovers Kate Kane’s Batsuit, as well as a new responsibility. “The process has always been a legacy,” said Leslie.
“It is the suit, but the person also has to be worthy of carrying that legacy,” she continued. “And this is the kind of journey that Ryan takes because when she gets the suit for the first time, like me, when I started work, you question whether or not you are worthy of what it really represents and what that legacy means. you’ll find out if she becomes worthy or not, but it’s really the journey of owning your Batwoman. “
Unlike Kate, Ryan has no relationship with the characters in the series.
“I wanted a girl that no one was connected with,” said Dries. “We have no family ties. She is a nobody, that is the main point. She is invisible. it is lost in the system. And then it was easier to integrate her into the world and the bat team because she is that woman and everyone works together. “
Described as likable, messy, a little goofy and indomitable, Ryan looks nothing like Kate Kane. With no one in her life to keep her under control, she spent years a drug dealer, dodging GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in his van with his plant. A girl who would steal milk for a stray cat and could also kill it with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and totally undisciplined.
Leslie’s cast represented an innovative moment for the franchise, as she became the first black actress to play Batwoman on screen. The show has already made positive efforts in the quest to increase representativeness. At first, Bat Woman received attention for being the first series of superheroes in the history of television to feature an LGBTQ character as the central character.
“When I was growing up, I didn’t see versions of me on the screen, especially in superhero movies and television shows. I remember when I was a kid, I saw two black superheroines and, technically, Catwoman is not really a superheroine. Then I saw one and Halle Berry played both, ”said Leslie. “So being able to be a vehicle in this industry that allows other people to look like me or follow the same path,” she added, “I think it’s important.”
“I think we deserve to have representation.”
2nd season Bat Woman opens on Sunday, January 17 on the CW.
