Playing older games on the new generation of consoles is almost always better thanks to the enhanced power, but Microsoft is taking it a step further with a new feature called FPS Boost for Xbox Series X and Series S. FPS Boost will provide an increase in the frame rate for certain titles compatible with previous versions of Xbox One when played on current generation Xbox consoles, doubling or quadrupling the original game frame rates.
FPS Boost will initially be available for five games: Far Cry 4, New Super Lucky’s Tale, Sniper Elite 4, EA Sports UFC 4, and Watch Dogs 2. The frame rate for each of these games will be significantly increased, according to Microsoft, which means 60 fps in the case of UFC 4or up to 120 fps for New Super Lucky’s Tale.
Microsoft said on Wednesday in an Xbox Wire post that the company “has partnered closely with developers to improve the experience while maintaining the game’s original intent” for titles that support FPS Boost.
As soon as the resource goes live, players will be able to open the “Manage game” option and find a new menu called “Compatibility options”. Here, players can activate features like Auto HDR and FPS Boost if they are available in the game they are playing. In the meantime, a small icon will let players know if FPS Boost is enabled, once they press the Nexus button.
Microsoft does not yet have a release date for FPS Boost, but mentions that it is scheduled to be part of this year’s spring console update. In addition to the release date, players can expect announcements of new games that will support FPS Boost in the coming months.
