Australian man takes legal action against Apple after his iPhone X ‘exploded’ in his pocket

Apple is facing a lawsuit in Australia after an iPhone X user claims the device exploded in his pocket, causing second-degree burns. As reported by 7 news, the incident occurred in 2019 and the man is now taking legal action after Apple reportedly did not answer his questions about the problem.

The report explains:

Scientist Robert De Rose was sitting in his office when he felt a pain in his leg and heard a fizzy sound coming out of his pocket.

“I heard a faint pop sound, followed by a hiss and then I felt an intense pain in my right leg, so I immediately jumped up and realized it was my phone,” he told 7NEWS.

He pulled the iPhone X out of his pocket, which was just over a year old, to find black smoke coming out of it.

Due to the explosion of the iPhone X, De Rose says he suffered “second degree burns” on his thigh. “I had ashes everywhere and my skin had peeled off,” he said to 7NEWS. De Rose goes on to state that he has contacted Apple several times about the problem, but never got an answer.

De Rose says he is now working with Carbone Lawyers in a lawsuit against Apple seeking compensation. The company is also representing a second Melbourne man who claims that “he got a burnt wrist after his Apple Watch overheated”.

An Apple spokesman said 7NEWS that the company takes customer safety seriously and is investigating both complaints. Both actions were moved to the District Court.

But as we always say about these types of stories, what is important to remember is that this is just one user and there are millions of iPhone X units and Apple Watch units in the world, so there is no reason to fear that your device might also enter combustion. These fires are extremely rare, but they will happen with any device that sells in the tens of millions.
