Audi is the best-selling electric vehicle brand in Norway.
GM does not sell EVs in Norway.
You didn’t think Audi – and especially its Norwegian operation – would stand still while GM and Will Ferrell challenged it in electric vehicles, did you?
To this end, Audi turned to “proud Norwegian” and “Viking among Vikings” Kristofer Hivju, from The Game of Thrones to clarify things.
The ad encourages “not to hate, but to imitate”.
There are a total of three shorts starring Hivju, but the one where Hivju finds a globe with a hole supposedly drilled by Ferrell hits this Norwegian, well, particularly the Norwegian.
Norway is a special source of pride for Audi. According to registration data from Norway, the E-Tron (SUV and Sportback) was the best selling model in 2020, with 9,227 units – surpassing the Tesla Model 3. This is more E-Trons than Audi sold in the USA in 2020 (7,202, according to Automotive News) Considering Ferrell’s “per capita” start to the GM commercial, it’s actually a little embarrassing for the US

Audi announcement – Kristoffer Hivju claims Norway’s EV supremacy
Battery powered electric models accounted for 54% of light vehicle sales in Norway in 2020 – up from 42% in 2019 and just 1% of the market 10 years ago. US sales remain at less than 2% of EVs across the country, although California has exceeded 5%.
Although this year’s Super Bowl will feature fewer brands launching electric vehicles than last year, Audi’s smart cut (including the two other shorts below) and an unofficial Porsche Taycan ad definitely kept things interesting.
For this this weekend, skål!
