Matt James, a 29-year-old New York City real estate agent, chose Rachael Kirkconnell, a 24-year-old graphic designer from Cumming, Georgia, who was his winner at the end of the 25th season of The bachelor on Monday, March 15, according to Reality Steve. Before the Final Rose Ceremony, Matt eliminated Michelle Young, a 27-year-old teacher from Woodbury, Minnesota, after he realized he was more in love with Rachael. However, Matt and Rachael were not engaged. At the Final Ceremony of the Rose, Matt told Rachael that he couldn’t ask her to marry him, but he would like to continue dating. She accepts her Final Rose and leaves without an engagement ring or an engagement ring.

Fast forward to February 2021 and Reality Steve confirmed that Matt and Rachael are no longer together afterwards The bachelor. Reality Steve reported that Matt broke up with Rachael after the Valentine’s Day weekend together. The report came amid Rachael’s racism scandal.
If you’re not involved in the controversy, here’s a recap: In January 2021, Rachael was criticized after TikTok user @maddyybierster, Rachael’s former schoolmate, claimed that she was bullied by Rachael for dating black men. “Girlieee, remember when you bullied me in high school for liking black guys ???” the user subtitled a clip of Rachael on a date with Matt. After TikTok went viral, the user shared several DMs of other women who claimed to have similar experiences with Rachael when it came to dating black men.
A TikTok video from @feministmama went viral in January 2021, when the user exposed Rachael for liking racist social media posts and for joining controversial groups. TikToker shared three social media screenshots that Rachael liked: one of the two women in front of a Confederacy flag, one of the three women wearing sombreros, ponchos and mustaches, and one of a woman with a “Make America Great Again” cap . Rachael was also criticized at the time, after a photo of her in 2018 at a themed planting party at Georgia College went viral.

At about the time of Reality Steve’s account, Matt broke the silence about Rachael’s controversy, which seemed to confirm that they are no longer together. “The past few weeks have been one of the most challenging of my life, and while there are still several episodes of the season, it is important that I take the time to address the worrying information that has surfaced since we finished filming,” he wrote.
He continued: “The reality is that I am learning about these situations in real time, and it has been devastating and painful to be frank … Chris’s failure to receive and understand the emotional work that my friend Rachel Lindsay was graciously taking on and explaining patiently the racist story of Antebellum South, a painful story that every American should understand intimately, was worrying and painful to watch, ”James continued. “As blacks and allies immediately knew and understood, it was a clear reflection of a much bigger problem that the ‘The Bachelor’ franchise has failed to address adequately for years.”
After the Reality Steve report, a source told The Sun that Matt “surprised” Rachael with his breakup and “refuses to speak” to her. “He ignored her messages and gave no response when he took her by surprise with the breakup,” a source told The Sun, claiming that Matt “excluded her”. “The separation came completely out of nowhere. He stayed with her throughout the drama until he suddenly decided not to. “
According to The Sun source, the production “hit Matt” and “ruined” his relationship with Rachael. “He listened to the producers who initially supported Rachael, but became their controllers and less supporters after Chris Harrison’s interview with Rachel Lindsay,” said the source. “Once the network started to be canceled and not just Rachael, its tone changed.
