Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman poured cold water over the rumors of a special Apple hardware event supposedly scheduled for March 16, rumors that started circulating at the end of the week because of unproven tweets.
Earlier this week, Twitter accounts “LeaksApplePro” and “FrontTron” stated that Apple was planning to launch a new model of iPad Pro, iPad mini and tracking hardware “AirTags” at a major event on March 16. South Korean publication Economic Daily News he later picked up and ran with the unsubstantiated gossip in a report that has since been quoted by various online media.
“LeaksApplePro” is not known to have insights into Apple’s business and has already made erroneous claims related to new products and launch schedules. “FrontTron”, in turn, seems to focus on Samsung devices and is largely unknown in the world of Apple. Although not a supplier of inaccurate forecasts like “LeaksApplePro”, “FrontTron” has no history in the area.
On Friday, Gurman, a well-connected insider with solid Apple sources, put the nail in the coffin and confirmed on twitter that there will be no event on March 16th. Although he does not specify when the company plans to hold its typical spring event, Gurman notes “AirTags” will not be released on the 16th.
Twitter’s seemingly fake “reports” were probably assumptions based on legitimate reports and historical release dates.
Apple is due to introduce new iPad hardware this spring, in sync with its annual release cycle. Several reports point to an announcement sometime in March, although that date may be postponed due to prolonged development and delays in the supply chain caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
