The contact was brief and the discussions did not advance to the level of senior management, the report added, citing people informed on the matter.

The talks faltered after the iPhone maker asked Nissan to make Apple-branded cars, a demand seen as effectively turning the automaker into just a hardware supplier, the newspaper reported.

Reuters reported in December that Apple was moving ahead with autonomous car technology and intended to produce a passenger car that could include its own innovative battery technology as early as 2024.

The news of the approach comes in the wake of Hyundai Motor Co’s announcement that it is no longer in talks with Apple over autonomous electric cars, just a month after confirming early-stage negotiations with the tech giant.
