AOC tweeted ‘Abolish ICE’ after the agency celebrated MLK Day

Congressman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., on Monday did not seem impressed by a tweet from the US Department of Immigration and Customs (ICE) in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

To show its appreciation for the civil rights icon on the federal holiday, the ICE tweeted the image of a statue of the King, with the text: “Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message of hope, justice and equality”

Without addressing King directly, Ocasio-Cortez retweeted the text and called for the agency to be abolished.

Ocasio-Cortez called for the dismantling of the agency for years, even at times when his fellow Democrats seemed to back down on the idea.

Although Ocasio-Cortez’s Twitter feed on Monday was full of references to King and his legacy, King’s niece, Alveda King, told Fox News that the congresswoman should “take a page out of Martin Luther King Jr’s book . ”

The suggestion came in response to Ocasio-Cortez’s comments during a meeting at the virtual city hall last week, in which she referred to President Donald Trump as the “poison of white supremacy”.

“I believe that AOC should really take a page out of Martin Luther King Jr.’s book” King told Fox News presenter Harris Faulkner.

Alveda told Faulkner that although his uncle praised the law for keeping bad actors in line, “he also said that the law cannot transform the human heart”.

“There are laws in the books now that will severely punish white supremacists, and that must be the case,” she explained. “We know that white supremacy is wrong, it must be punished, but every crime against humanity is bad and that is why we have to protect human dignity, but not just with the law. We have to transform these hearts ”.
