Amateur painter Churchill gave the piece, called Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque, to the President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as a reminder of their time together attending the Casablanca Conference and then visiting Marrakesh in January 1943. It was there that the two world leaders discussed their plan to defeat the Nazis on Monday World War. Churchill painted about 500 paintings, but this is the only one he did during the war years.
After Roosevelt died in 1945, the painting was sold by the president’s son and changed hands several times before Pitt and Jolie took it in 2011. The A sisters split up in 2016, and the work is now part of the Jolie family collection , which is offering.
Nick Orchard, who oversees British modern art at Christie’s, said the piece is “probably [Churchill’s] most important job. ”And that before adding the Brangelina factor.
Since the separation of Pitt and Jolie in 2016, they have fought in court over the division of their assets, which include some incredible works of art. The two were officially declared single again in 2019, but continue to discuss the details of the divorce.
In an interview published Monday, Jolie spoke to the Brit Vogue about how the past few years have been “very difficult” for her.
“I’ve been focusing on healing our family,” said Jolie. “It’s coming back slowly, like the melting ice and the blood coming back into my body.”
For now, she and the six children she shares with Pitt – twins Knox and Vivienne, 12; Shiloh, 14; Zahara, 15; Pax, 16; and Maddox, 19 – are holed up on a Los Angeles property that also has a profound history; It once belonged to the famous film director Cecil B. DeMille.
“I wanted it to be close to their father, who is only five minutes away,” said Jolie of the house. “I felt a little pressure coming in. As if he had escaped to where DeMille and [Charlie] Chaplin used to go out. I love the fact that there is no entertainment room, but lots of paths and places to walk and think. I feel very happy that we have that right now. “
The Oscar-winning director and actress offered a glimpse into what pandemic life has been like for the family.
“We got into this after leaving the hospital with Zahara [who underwent surgery last year], and we are very happy that she is doing well in entering the block with a different mood, ”said Jolie. “But, you know, there are also these other life markers: Pax entering the last year, but not being able to enjoy everything it is to be a veteran; Zahara finally got her driver’s license, but she is auditioning with the driver wrapped in a suit complete with masks. It is not how you imagine those moments. But birthdays go on and I think that for a lot of people, it made us feel very human together. There is something beautiful about this. “
