Android Auto receives support for split screen into main units of wide screen

Google detailed some of the new features that came to Android devices in a blog post late last month. It included features like password verification, message scheduling, a dark theme for Google Maps and more. The post also highlighted some new Android Auto features, such as custom wallpapers, voice-activated games, home screen shortcuts, and a new split-screen mode for cars with larger screens. While some of these features are already available to many Android Auto users, the company has already started launching the new split-screen support in cars with wide-screen main units.

According to a recent post from Reddit u / My_Name_Is_Taken user, the new split screen layout has now started to appear for some Android Auto users. As you can see in the attached screenshot, the new layout shows two applications at the same time, with the main application occupying a larger part of the screen on the left and the secondary application occupying a comparatively smaller part on the right. In this specific case, the Spotify app can be seen on the left, while Google Maps is on the right.

Android Auto split screen mode

A comment from Reddit user u / heresyfnord confirms that split-screen mode also allows users to change the position of applications. Simply put, your current main application will always appear on the left and the second application on the right. Therefore, all you have to do is switch to a different application and it will appear on the left, and the previous application will be automatically moved to the right.

Although split-screen mode is only available on wide main units by default, there is a workaround to obtain it on smaller main units. As the user u / kv1dr points out, you can use an app like HeadUnit Reloaded to modify the resolution of the Android Auto main unit, and the new split screen layout should start to work as intended. If you don’t have a wide-screen main unit, you can download HeadUnit Reloaded by following this link.
