Android apps like Gmail are crashing and ‘WebView’ may be to blame

This afternoon, several Android users (including themselves) suddenly saw pop-up notifications on their devices saying the apps had stopped working. Many of the applications that suddenly generate errors cannot be opened, and they include some important ones, such as Gmail, various banking applications, Google Pay and others.

There are reports of the problem on DownDetector, Reddit and Twitter, and the Google Workspace Cloud status panel confirms that they are aware of problems with the Gmail app on Android. According to the status message, there will be an update on the issue at 8:05 pm Eastern Time.

If you are experiencing this problem, something that has worked for many people is to access the Google Play Store on your device and uninstall the latest update for a system application called “Android System WebView”. It is the application that provides Chrome-like browser rendering within applications and, according to developers and end users, many of the errors that people are seeing indicate that the problem lies there.

Uninstalling the updates made my phone calm down and go back to normal, if we get any official information from Google about the problem, I will update this post.
