‘American Idol’ welcomes Katharine McPhee to powerful duets

Katherine McPhee returned to the stage of “American Idol”.

The 37-year-old singer-actress was second in the fifth season of the singing competition, losing to Taylor Hicks.

Now, she has returned to the show to perform with two of this season’s contestants, Alyssa Wray and Willie Spence.

“When I grew up, I would go to my mom’s bed and watch ‘American Idol’ [McPhee] was on the program, “Wray said in a package on the program.” I just thought she was an insane power. “

The two played Whitney Houston’s “I’m Your Baby Tonight” together – although Wray, 19, was not very familiar with the song before rehearsals.

“Let’s sing ‘I’m You Baby Tonight’ by Whitney Houston, which I heard you didn’t even know, which made me shed a tear because you’re so young,” joked the “Smash” actress.

The performance surprised the judges, who were enthusiastic about the pair.

“You two together, I’m telling you, greeted each other very well,” said Lionel Richie. “… Together, you made it look like you’ve been doing this for a hundred years.”

“I think you are the first singer who really stood on the stage with the other star,” praised Katy Perry.

Spence started his night with a cover of “Wind Beneath My Wings”, by Bette Midler, before welcoming McPhee on stage to play “The Prayer”, by Céline Dion and Andrea Bocelli.

“One of the things that I find really special about you that I love about singers is the ability to make you feel like you’re telling a story,” said McPhee in his rehearsals.

The star dedicated his work to his father, who died three years ago.

“I hope it is as special for the audience as it is for us,” she gushed.

As was the case with McPhee’s performance with Wray, the trio of judges had nothing but kind words to say about the duet.

McPhee has appeared on “American Idol” several times since she came in second in 2006. According to IMDb, she appeared on the show’s 7th, 15th and 18th seasons, in addition to her Sunday night performance.
