Alabama Shakes drummer Steven Johnson denies child abuse charges after arrest

Alabama Shakes drummer Steven Johnson says he is innocent of child abuse charges against him, his lawyer said on Friday.

Johnson, 35, was arrested earlier this week after being indicted for child abuse.

“Steve Johnson maintains his innocence in all these allegations. And that is what allegations are,” his lawyer Nick Lough told the Associated Press.

The prosecution did not list any details about the prosecution other than defining the criminal status of child abuse to “deliberately torture, intentionally abuse, cruelly beat or intentionally mistreat” a child under the age of 18.

His lawyers filed a petition seeking more information about the prosecution. Lough said they have reason to believe that the prosecution may involve what he described as a “beating” incident.

Court records show that in 2019 a criminal complaint was filed against Johnson, accusing him of hitting his son with a belt, causing bruises on his buttocks and thighs. The case was subsequently closed.

The last charge was returned in October. However, Lough said the arrest this month came days after Johnson had his parental rights restored in court.

The indictment is scheduled for Wednesday.
