Alabama hires Todd Watson as his special assistant to the head coach

On Tuesday, Alabama announced the addition of Todd Watson to the coaching staff, who will serve as the assistant coach’s special assistant.

For the past three seasons, Watson was part of the Tennessee technical team as Director of Football Operations for the first two years and worked last season as Director of Football Programming.

“Todd has a long history as a successful high school coach in Alabama and, more recently, in the college game on the operational side,” said Nick Saban in a statement. “We are excited to add your knowledge and experience to our team. Todd was always someone for whom we had the greatest respect as a person and a coach. ”

Prior to his tenure in Tennessee, Watson was Director of Football Operations and High School Relations at Troy 2015-17. Watson was also one of Alabama’s most successful high school coaches before joining Troy.

He trained at Foley High School for 10 seasons and posted a record 80-36 and coached future stars for Crimson Tide like the Atlanta Falcons Julio Jones along with other NFL players like Robert Foster and DJ Fluker.

“It is an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to work for the most famous program in the history of college football,” Watson said in a statement. “My family and I are excited to be back in the great state of Alabama and look forward to being part of Coach Saban’s team.”

The statement said Watson’s responsibilities range from working with the school, preparing and breaking down games for special and offensive teams, while assisting in camps and clinics.
