Adaptation by Jon M. Chu of Tony-winning musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda shines with community and culture – Deadline

Warner Bros. launched not one, but two emotionally charged trailers for the big screen adaptation of the Tony Award winning song by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes, which gives us the hope, love and energy of the Latin American community and American Dream. The musical film directed by Jon M. Chu will finally hit theaters on June 18.

On the heights it is set in the titular Latinx community of the bustling city of Washington Heights. When the charismatic owner of the local bodega of the neighborhood, and the humble narrator of the photo, finally decides to fulfill his dream of going to the island that his parents called home, his departure will change his beloved block forever.

The new trailers are bursting at the seams with Miranda’s fast-paced and kinetic musical style, while Chu’s talent for capturing the cinematic power of dance performances shines with epic lenses that hark back to the old Hollywood charm – but this time, it’s full of people of color. The film comes at a time when there is a demand for the representation of Latinx on the big screen, since the story is a celebration of Latinx culture and the preservation of the community.

On the heights Anthony Ramos (A star is born, Broadway’s Hamilton), Corey Hawkins (BlacKkKlansman), Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera (TV’s Life), Olga Merediz (Broadway’s On the heights), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Broadway’s Rent), Gregory Diaz IV (Broadway’s Matilda the Musical), Stephanie Beatriz (from TV Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Dascha Polanco (TV’s Orange is the new black) and Jimmy Smits icon.
