(CNN) – After disappearing on a snowmobile, a Canadian teenager managed to survive by building a snow cave to stay until he was found.
A 17-year-old young man in British Columbia, who was not identified, built himself a snow cave in the hinterland to take shelter after being separated from his group, according to South Cariboo Search and Rescue.
At around 6:15 pm on Saturday, the 100 Mile House Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was notified of a delayed snowmobiler.
The teenager’s family and friends returned to a parking lot, but he never showed up, according to an RCMP press release.
Some members of the group stayed on the hill and started looking, while others went out to alert the South Cariboo Search and Rescue, which contacted the 100 Mile House RCMP. South Cariboo SAR eventually located the teenager, considering him “in good condition,” the RCMP said in its statement.
“This young man did everything right after things went wrong,” wrote SAR in a Facebook post praising the teenager. “He separated from his group and after several failed attempts to get out of the area, the way he entered and not knowing the terrain and the area, he parked his sled in an open area and walked to a nearby wooded area and built himself an incredible snow cave to spend the night. “
The post continued: “When our team members found him, he was in the shelter with food and water. This young man made our task a little less difficult by staying in the same place and having some knowledge of winter survival in the countryside. “
The 100 Mile House RCMP thanked the South Cariboo SAR team for bringing the search to another positive result.
“We, in the south of Cariboo, are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of well-trained volunteers to help in times of need,” RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson wrote in a statement.
