Mr. Potato Head is no longer a gentleman
NEW YORK – Mr. Potato Head is no longer a gentleman.
Hasbro, the company that makes the potato-shaped plastic toy, is giving the potato a new gender-neutral name: Potato Head. The change will appear in the boxes this year.
Toy manufacturers are upgrading their classic brands to appeal to today’s children. Barbie changed her blonde image and now comes in various skin tones and body shapes. Thomas the Tank Engine added more female characters. And American Girl is now selling a doll.
Hasbro said that Mr. Potato Head, which has been around for 70 years, needed a modern makeover.
