A new batch of Tesla Model S vehicles with the 2021 design update has been spotted leaving the Fremont plant when deliveries are finally due to begin.
In January, Tesla introduced an updated version of the Model S and Model X that brings a new powertrain, new interior and updated exterior design to Tesla’s two main electric vehicles.
When launching the new vehicles, CEO Elon Musk said that deliveries should begin in a few weeks – placing the first deliveries in February, but now we are in early March and they have not yet started.
A few weeks ago, we got an email sent by Musk to Tesla employees, in which he said the automaker was still redesigning the production lines for the Model S / X, but it was “almost done”:
“The production lines of the Model S / X are almost completed with the retrofitting and will aim for maximum production in the next quarter. Demand is high, so we will soon need to go back to two shifts. Please recommend friends for recruitment.“
In the past few weeks, some updated Model S vehicles have been seen at the Fremont plant, but Tesla appeared to be waiting to start deliveries.
Now Tesla is finally moving some of these vehicles, as a small batch was seen leaving the factory in a trailer:
This may indicate that deliveries are finally about to start a few days before the end of the quarter.
The updated Model S and Model X are expected to give some life to vehicle programs, which have not seen much love from Tesla in recent years, as the automaker has focused on Model 3 and Model Y.
Sales have been steadily declining in recent years, so far only a fraction of what was at its peak.
As Musk noted in the same email to employees, the design update has already resulted in an increase in orders, and Tesla plans to build the Model S and Model X in two shifts at the Fremont plant – something that hasn’t been needed for some time. time .
However, with deliveries starting now and total production not expected until some point in the next quarter, we will have to wait until the second half of the year to see what kind of volume the Model S and Model X can move.
