On Sunday, two of the best defenders of all time will face off in Green Bay. Then, two of the best young NFL quarterbacks will face off in Kansas City.
Most would say the Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes is currently the best in the game. Some who know the game and study it carefully are wondering if Bills quarterback Josh Allen has caught up with Mahomes.
Simms and I, separately, have heard about these lines based on Allen’s incredible improvement in 2020. And the point often made is this: there is a difference when it comes to seeing Allen performing in person.
Size, speed, mobility, precision. Incredible speed when he plays. Incredible ability to run to one side and shoot to the other.
Mahomes continues to have unquestionable talent and will continue to be among the best in the game as long as he plays. But Allen also reached that level and is not yet 25 years old.
Allen has a chance to persuade many others that he caught Mahomes on Sunday. Even if the Bills lose, seeing them on the same field on the same day with a Super Bowl spot on the line will provide a clear comparison between two of the best young defenders who have ever played.
