Disney cast Robert Boulter as young Luke Skywalker for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so why didn’t they bring the actor back to The Mandalorian?
A different actor had already been cast to play young Luke Skywalker, so why didn’t Lucasfilm bring him to The Mandalorian end of season 2? Using the aging removal technology that was previously used in Rogue One: a Star Wars story and more recently, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Mark Hamill was able to reprise the role.
Din Djarin gathered his team of allies to rescue Baby Yoda, also known as Moff Gideon’s Grogu, who kidnapped him in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 6 entitled “The Tragedy”. Following a plan devised to protect Grogu, Mando finally reunited with his adopted son, but the reunion did not last long, as Luke came to take the Child and train him with the Force. in Tython it worked and he was able to call on other Jedi who could help hone his skills, as suggested by Ahsoka Tano.

Luke’s appearance in The Mandalorian it was a big surprise, but I admit that not everyone was a fan of your cameo. There are valid criticisms of how their involvement ended up taking this crucial moment out of Din and Baby Yoda’s story. Instead of the discussions being focused on Pedro Pascal’s incredible performance or how this separation changes the course of The Mandalorian Moving on, the biggest result at the end of season 2 was Luke’s unexpected arrival – or how bad Luke looked. There are limitations to what technology can do, but Lucasfilm could have taken a different path by bringing in an actor they had already cast to play young Luke Skywalker in Robert Boulter, who had already been cast to play the character of a planned Star Wars The Force Awakens Cameo. As revealed in a piece of concept art for the film, the actor was expected to appear as young Luke during the vision of Rey’s Force. This proves that Disney and Lucasfilm are not entirely averse to reformulating their legacy characters. So why not call Boulter to finally play Luke, considering that they’ve already cast him for the role of a different project?
There are a few reasons why Lucasfilm decided not to do this. While it is uncertain why Boulter’s cameo was ruled out, the fact remains that it was something they could edit outside of the film. Second, and more importantly, Lucasfilm was badly burned when they tried to cast Alden Ehrenreich as the young Han Solo in Solo to Solo: A Star Wars Story. It didn’t matter that Ehrenreich did a good job capturing the galactic smuggler’s charm and bravado in his youth, most of the fan community didn’t like the idea and that was reflected in the film’s box office. This may have made Lucasfilm more careful when reformulating legacy characters, opting for a young and mysterious version of them, rather than risking a reformulated adverse reaction.
It is not known whether young Luke will appear in The Mandalorian or in other spin-offs planned around the same time period. It’s safe to assume that Baby Yoda will eventually reunite with Din in the future, so there are ways for the fan-favorite hero to make another cameo. If Lucasfilm tries to do this again, they must polish the aging CGI in Hamill, as viewers may not forgive him for his rough appearance as they were at the end of season 2.
