The San Francisco 49ers announced that it has signed a one-year contract with restricted free agent Jeff Wilson Jr. Wilson Wilson led the team in running yards and touchdowns during the 2020 season and proved he could start and perform at a high level .
Wilson signed with San Francisco as a free agent not called after the 2018 NFL Draft. Wilson Jr. had a reputation for fumbling early in his career, but his talent shone through last season, recording the best of his career in receptions, yards received and touchdowns. The same can be said of Wilson Jr. as a rusher.
On the way to his fourth season, Wilson Jr. will likely be the 49ers RB2 and is expected to share the carry with Raheem Mostert in 2021. Wilson Jr. ended the season with 603 yards, and 373 of them came after contact.
He also broke a tackle more than 10% of the time while winning a first down in almost a quarter of his attacks. Wilson Jr. has the best view of the team for my money. It was smart of San Francisco to bring him back.
49ers will not have that luxury in the next off-season, as Wilson Jr. will be an unrestricted free agent in 2022.
