Among the many questions that people have reflected since the draft order became official is whether the 49ers would trade to secure the coveted “franchise Quarterback”. There were good arguments on both sides of this issue, but there is something else worth asking: what if 49ers didn’t have to negotiate to get a defender in April?
In today’s Niner-tion Podcast, Nate Nelson and Leo Luna took the leap and made the first 12 choices of a so-called 49ers dream mock draft. This was not a mockland fantasy where every team at the head of the 49ers goes crazy and passes Trevor Lawrence, just one of a million possible scenarios that leave a quarterback available after the first 11 choices.
If that were the case, what would Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch do? Almost any front-line member who has spoken openly about recruiting has mentioned how important it is to replenish the team with cheap, young talent for the future of the franchise. That would seem to exclude the possibility of exchanging for someone they liked, but if he fell in love with you? Kyle and John take a risk and make the choice, or are they looking to take advantage of a needy QB team trying to make a big noise on their own? Also, what if they stay where they are and just pass a quarterback?
That would probably be the end of 49ers’ Twitter, not that Lynch or Shanahan cared much about things like that.
Much about the team’s true intentions remains unknown and, truth be told, we will probably never know for sure what their ideal scenario would be. Still, I find it fun to think about what today’s show did for me.
