3 dead, including suspects, in shots near New Orleans airport: Sheriff

Authorities in Louisiana are investigating a shooting that left three people dead, including the suspect, and two wounded on the road from New Orleans’ Louis Armstrong International Airport, according to Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

“The police officers who arrived located several victims with gunshot wounds,” the sheriff said in a statement. “Three people were declared dead at the scene and two more were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The two victims transported are in stable condition.”

It happened near a gun store on block 6700 of Airline Drive in Metairie, Louisiana, west of New Orleans, and armed passers-by helped to subdue the sniper, according to authorities.

“At this point, it appears that a suspect shot 2 victims inside the scene, then was involved and shot outside the scene by several other individuals,” continued the sheriff’s statement. “The suspect is one of those killed at the scene.”

The New Orleans office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it was sending special agents to assist local MPs in the investigation.

Jefferson Parish’s Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News. Sheriff Joe Lopinto was due to deliver a press conference at 5 pm local time.

New Orleans Advocate reporter Ramon Vargas wrote on Twitter that he saw two screens used to protect the bodies from sight, installed outside the Jefferson Gun Outlet and a pistol on the floor.

The shooting came about two months after a shooting on Christmas Eve left two men dead in Metairie, according to the sheriff’s office.
