Zynga acquires Echtra Games | GamesIndustry.biz

Zynga announced today that it has acquired Torchlight 3, developer Echtra Games.

The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Founded in 2016, San Francisco-based Echtra has shipped just one game so far, Torchlight 3 from last year.

However, Zynga’s statement made it clear that the company’s interest was reinforced by the pedigree of developers such as Echtra’s founder, Max Schaefer, who worked on the first two Diablo games and the three Torchlight titles.

“Max and his team at Echtra Games are responsible for some of the most legendary game properties ever created and are experts in the action RPG genre and cross-platform development,” said Zynga CEO Frank Gibeau.

He added: “This acquisition will be instrumental in the growth of our iconic PC and console furniture brands and licenses, while helping to further expand Zynga’s total addressable market.”

To start, Echtra will be collaborating with Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio on “a new RPG, yet to be announced, for multiplatform game”.

A Zynga representative said GamesIndustry.biz there would be no layoffs associated with the acquisition.

The president of Zynga’s publication, Bernard Kim, said GamesIndustry.biz last month, that the company was planning to continue its series of acquisitions after having been successful in recent years by adding developers such as Gram Games, Small Giant, Peak Games and Rollic.

“We remain aggressive and curious about buying more game studios and technology companies that we believe can be added to Zynga,” said Kim.
