The 24-year-old won her first Emmy last year playing the troubled high school student Rue Bennett in HBO’s Euphoria, and she plays John David Washington’s 36-year-old younger girlfriend in Malcolm & Marie, debuting on Netflix at 5 of February.
The actress addressed the 12-year age difference between her and her co-star in a new interview for E !, stating that she thinks the controversy is because, ‘I played a 16-year-old girl since I was 16 . ‘

‘You have to remember, too, that people grew up with me as a child. It’s like watching, I think, your little brother now, you know, they’re grown … ‘she added.
‘So it is difficult for people to accept the idea that I grew up in real life. You know, although I still play a teenager on television, ‘she said of her role as Rue.
Both Rue and Marie’s roles came from screenwriter and director Sam Levinson, who created Euphoria and wrote and directed Malcolm & Marie.

The film was shot during the confinement of COVID-19 this summer, with only Zendaya and Washington forming the cast along with a minimal crew.
‘Sometimes, when you don’t see the roles you want, sometimes you have to be part of your creation. So I’m grateful that Sam wrote this film for us, ‘added Zendaya.
She also said that the safety of the cast and crew of the film was her ‘number one concern’, which they achieved by creating a ‘bubble’ environment.

Mulligan mentioned that she sure as hell ‘can’t see herself as a Disney child right now’, although Zendaya said that this is still part of who she is.
– What happens is that I am. And to some extent, I am grateful for that. That’s when I started and learned a lot from that experience ‘, he added.
