Rumors about the so-called Nintendo Switch Pro have been heating up for a while, with leaks suggesting that the four-year-old console is about to make some pretty exciting graphical updates. And we may have just had our best glimpse of what he might be able to do, courtesy of an impressive Zelda: Breath of the Wild video updated to an impressive 8K.
The video (below) shows a modified version of the game, with the graphics increased to four times the maximum output of the current 1080p switch. And, spoiler alert, it makes Breath of the Wild (one of the best Nintendo Switch games) look, well, incredibly wild.
Created by Digital Dreams, the footage not only increases the resolution, but also adds the polishing of the ray tracing. This is a technique for creating much more advanced and realistic lighting, simulating the way it bounces off objects. It is a rendering tool that was, until recently, confined to the realm of CGI films – but it is starting to stand out in video games. Needless to say, it requires a lot of horsepower – but our best video editing computers must be up to the task.
And in the forest of Zelda’s Hyrule kingdom, it looks absolutely stunning. Diffused light spills between branches and mountain rocks look more realistic than ever. The whole thing looks much more engaging than ever.
As for whether the 8K Zelda will soon become reality, it all depends on the technical skill of the Switch Pro (or, as they say it’s called, the Super Nintendo Switch). With leaks suggesting that the next switch will peak in 4K, the video above may have to remain a fantasy for a few years yet. But who knows – with the new and offering incredible graphics, perhaps Nintendo is planning to play blind to stay in the game.
Still, even if the Switch sequence doesn’t match this 8K extravaganza, it still sounds like a solid update for gamers – especially in portable mode. It is rumored that the device features a large OLED display and internal components similar to the PS4. In fact, a handheld device as powerful as the PS4 looks incredible.
