In 1978, Richard Donner’s Superman presented the now famous slogan: “You will believe that a man can fly”. Now, more than 40 years later, here it comes Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a movie that will make you believe that Batman can say “fuck you”. Because Snyder Cut, as all children call it, is officially rated R. Of course, this is not the first superhero film rated for minors – not even by far. But it is further proof that Snyder’s view of these characters is geared towards adults, just in case you need another reminder.
You have to admit: the novelty of a superhero movie for children under 18 kind of ran out at this point. Yes, there was a time when such an idea was considered unthinkable, but now we are far beyond that. However, it is still interesting to note that Zack Snyder’s Justice League, also known as Snyder Cut, now has an official R rating. The rating comes from FilmRatings.com, which notes that the film is “Rated R for violence and some language. “
Some language?! Watch out, children! Flash can say “shit” or something! Anyway, this news will undoubtedly be widely accepted by Snyder Cut’s very vocal fanbase, all of whom like to loudly proclaim that Snyder’s superhero movies are not fucking kids! They are serious movies for serious adults! And God help you if you disagree.
The Snyder Cut had a very strange journey to the screens. The story has many twists and turns to be retold properly, but here’s the gist: Zack Snyder was the original director of Justice League, but withdrew from the project for personal reasons. Snyder was replaced by Joss Whedon. And while Snyder is still the credited director of Justice League which was released in 2017, much of the film features things remade by Whedon.
Because of this, Snyder’s fervent fans began to swear that there was a legendary Snyder Cut. That it was 100% ready to go and all that Warner Bros. had to do was launch it. This, of course, turned out not to be entirely true. Yes, Snyder had the footage he shot. And yes, there was a rough cut assembled and shown to studio executives before he left the film. But Snyder’s cut, at least as the fandom understood it, didn’t really exist. Not in a final edited form.
Everything changed when Warner Bros. decided to launch its own streaming service, HBO Max. Realizing it could attract subscribers with the Snyder Cut promise, HBO Max announced that the film would arrive in 2021 and gave Snyder an incredible $ 70 million to finish the film. Since then, the director has been cutting his footage and shooting two new scenes, or “pieces”, as he calls them.
And now here we are, with a 240-minute film with a strict rating that will hit HBO Max in March 18, 2021.
