It was a campaign that dominated the internet (and, occasionally, Times Square billboards) for most of the three years: #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. Fans have spent years demanding that Warner Bros. launch the original version of Justice League from the principal Zack Snyder, who left production in the middle, with writer / director Joss Whedon coming in to finish the film. But did this mythical cut really exist? Well, yes and no, according to a long profile on the next release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
The way out goes deeper into the backstage problems that affected the production of Justice Leagueand the details that were left out as HBO Max prepares to debut the four-hour cut, now titled Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Here are some of the latest Zack Snyder’s Justice League details and a new image of Jared Leto’s Joker dressed as Jesus for some reason.
How was the original “Snyder cut”
First, the big question: was there really a “Snyder cut?” Yes and no. The version that will be released next month on HBO Max required extensive post-production work to be completed – a final cut has not been stopped for three years. The recently completed VFX and music cost Warner Bros. heavy $ 70 million, although Snyder said he will not receive a paycheck for his work on the new version. According to the Vanity Fair report:
When Snyder left Warner Bros., he took his laptop, which had a Justice League sticker. On the hard drive was its original version, almost four hours. It was devoid of visual effects, music and all the fine adjustments that make a film a movie. It was also in black and white. For him, it was a memory. He thought, ‘We would just show it to random people who come by, like our friends or something.’
The version that will arrive on HBO Max will not be exactly like that version. New characters have been added, such as Jared Leto’s Joker, while elements that were initially rejected by the studio will not be able to return, such as a shattered romance between Bruce Wayne of Ben Affleck and Lois Lane of Amy Adams.
“The intention was for Bruce to fall in love with Lois and then realize that the only way to save the world was to bring Superman back to life,” Snyder told Vanity Fair. “So he had this insane conflict, because Lois, of course, was still in love with Superman. We had this beautiful speech where [Bruce] said to Alfred: ‘I never had a life outside the cave. I never imagined a world for myself beyond that. But this woman makes me think that if I can get this group of gods together, my job will be done. I can give up. I can stop. ‘ And of course it doesn’t work for him. “
Joker becomes biblical
One of the new images shared by the Vanity Fair article is an image of Jared Leto’s Joker wearing a crown of thorns and a pose of Jesus Christ. It comes from the now extended sequence of “Knightmare”, which will see Leto replaying his role as Suicide squad, although with a completely different look and a newly-known catchphrase. And because we live in a society, we cannot have a Snyder film without abundant Judeo-Christian images.
The end of Reshot has a Cameo Hero that “Explodes the Minds of Fans”
Speaking of additional elements, Snyder is going “as deep and dark as he likes,” writes Anthony Breznican of Vanity Fair. But most intriguing, the new Snyder Justice League version comes with a remade ending that features a mind-blowing “hero cameo,” according to Breznican:
He can say to hell with the official DC timeline for the characters and let this alternate version of the Justice League story end wherever he wants. He put Superman in an elegant black suit instead of the iconic blue and red. He added the Joker (Jared Leto). He remade the ending with a cameo that will blow the minds of the most radical fans.
What could this special participation be? The first character that would come to mind would be Martian Manhunter, played by Harry Lennix, although this is unlikely, as most fans are already aware of this character’s cast. Green Lantern? Michael Keaton’s Batman? Who knows.
Zack Snyder hasn’t seen Joss Whedon’s version yet
Vanity Fair also investigates what happened when Snyder left the production of Justice League and Whedon embarked. Snyder and his wife and production partner Deborah Snyder left the project to deal with the family tragedy, as previously reported, but Whedon was not handpicked to continue Snyder’s work as previously stated. Snyder had been assigned to “watchdogs” on the set in the form of DC Entertainment creative chief Geoff Johns and Warner Bros. co-production chief. Jon Berg (“You could say nanny,” said Snyder), the first of whom was collaborating with Whedon on a Batgirl movie.
“It soon became clear that Warner Bros. was giving Whedon more and more power, ”reports Vanity Fair. “He would not only advise during the remakes, but he would also direct himself. Snyder says he only had a conversation with Whedon about the studio’s notes. “
After Whedon’s version was shown in private to Deborah Snyder and executive producer Christopher Nolan (oh, let it be a fly in that room), Deborah advised Zack Snyder never to watch that version. “They came and just said, ‘You can never see this movie,'” said Snyder.
But despite all the studio’s interference, even the executives were not satisfied with Whedon’s version. “When we got to see what Joss really did, it was amazing,” an anonymous studio executive told Vanity Fair. “The thief on the roof – so silly and horrible. The Russian family – so useless and meaningless. Everyone knew that. It was so weird because nobody wanted to admit what the shit was. “
Zack Snyder’s Justice turns on access HBO Max in March 18, 2021.
