Just before Zach Wilson took the field to play on BYU’s Pro Day, news broke of an exchange between 49ers and Dolphins involving the third overall choice in the draft.
The 49ers switched to 12th choice and two first rounders to go up for what most people believe will be a quarterback. Given the fact that the Jets have choice # 2 and getting to that point would guarantee 49ers their choice over non-Trevor Lawrence quarterbacks, it is reasonable to think that they called the Jets before agreeing to the Dolphins deal.
It is also reasonable to think that the Jets would have made that deal if they were to pass a quarterback at No. 2, so the way things happened certainly points to the Jets taking a quarterback. Wilson is generally considered to be the second best in this draft class and jet general manager Joe Douglas was in Provo to check him out on Friday.
After training, Wilson said he would be happy to go anywhere in the NFL and that he had some positive things to say about the Jets and Douglas.
“Excellent staff. I love these guys. Joe Douglas is a great guy. It was good for see you here. They have a good thing going, ”said Wilson, through Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.
The Jets were not doing very well when they went from 2 to 14 in 2020, but they hired a new coach at Robert Saleh and took some actions to deal with the weaknesses of the free agency. We will know in about a month whether Wilson is the next part of the plan to bring better results in the future.
