YouTube TV has announced that it is bringing several premium features to the service.
When it comes to finding the best over-the-top live TV service for cablescutters, the cost of subscription is probably the priority for most consumers. But resources are just as important. A sports fan may prefer unlimited space on a DVR, while a family of four can prioritize viewing on multiple devices. YouTube TV is expanding its feature offerings with a recently announced “Add-on option” to broadcast shows in 4K or save them for offline viewing.
Currently, the basic YouTube TV plan supports six individual user accounts and up to three simultaneous streams. But YouTube says that the same 4K add-on will also support “unlimited simultaneous streams at home,” which can be an attractive feature for, for example, larger families or in homes with several people who share the cost of the plan.
This is all very exciting, but YouTube is not currently sharing the cost of the package. When contacted by Gizmodo for comment, a spokesman said only that the benefits would be included in “an optional add-on for members”. (Hulu, for example, charges $ 10 per month in addition to your monthly subscription costs to support unlimited broadcasts.) The timing is also unclear, and YouTube had nothing more to share when asked to comment.
The features are certainly a welcome addition to an already excellent cable alternative, but the price will be key. The basic YouTube TV package – without any premium content via add-ons like Starz or Showtime – already costs $ 65 a month alone. This is the same cost of Hulu with live TV, but both start to get very expensive if you go crazy with additional entertainment packages and premium features.
Still, the 4K streaming push looks promising. And particularly now, while we are confined at home, the best possible flow may be worth spending a few extra dollars a month.
