As more people cut the traditional cable, Google’s YouTube TV has become the preferred option for streaming live television. This year, the service should receive even more news, including the arrival of 4K streaming on YouTube TV.
In a blog post this morning, YouTube confirms some planned updates for its main products, including YouTube itself, Music and also YouTube TV. One of the biggest conclusions of the post is that YouTube TV will soon add support for 4K streaming.
Although a specific launch window is not requested, YouTube TV will be launching a new add-on package in the not too distant future that allows for three new features. First of all, this includes the ability to view YouTube TV streams in 4K quality, of course, assuming the broadcaster has the ability to do so. 4K broadcasts are still very rare, but will become more popular in the future, especially as major events like the Super Bowl tried to broadcast in 4K.
In addition to 4K streaming, this new add-on package will also allow offline downloads of recordings on YouTube TV. We saw this feature for the first time yesterday, as its base is currently live on the YouTube TV app on Android.
Finally, this additional package will also give families the ability to use YouTube TV on more devices at the same time. As it is today, a family can watch the service on up to three devices at the same time, with a fourth addition starting one of the previous viewers. It is probably not very common for families to reach this limit regularly, but having the option to expand simultaneous flows is certainly welcome.
It is currently unclear how much this additional package will cost YouTube TV subscribers. The service starts at $ 65 / month.
